Old Folks' Party

In December, the school invites retired people to a Christmas Party. This event is hosted by Year 11 students. The invited come from residential homes, sheltered accommodation and the local community. The event began with Year 11 students inviting grandparents and their friends but as many grandparents were still in employment, there were fewer attending. The school then opened the invitation to the community so now we hire a coach to travel around Scunthorpe collecting guests for the afternoon.

The party begins after lunch and the guests are treated to a buffet and a sherry or cup of tea. Year 11 students who study Food Technology prepare and serve the buffet, supervised by the Technology staff. Year 11 students sit with the guests at the tables acting as hosts to ensure that they feel welcome and can assist with their needs. The guests are entertained by Year 11 students singing, dancing and there is usually a game of Bingo! They also have a chance to win prizes in a free raffle.

The school band provides excellent musical entertainment and the afternoon ends with a selection of rousing carols most ably led by the Deputy Headteacher and Bandmaster, Simon Stiles.

The guests are then transported home again full of good cheer and trifle!
