Key Stage 3 PE
Physical Education at Frederick Gough School throughout Key Stage 3 offers a wide range of sporting activities. This has been helped by the introduction of a Key Stage 3 initiative which is aimed at allowing pupils to experience activities which they would normally not do e.g. Badminton and Table Tennis. Pupils are encouraged to think positively about health and fitness throughout their PE lessons.
Pupils have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills within PE lessons through the organising and taking of warm-ups, also by assisting with other parts of lessons.
There are many opportunities for pupils to participate in extra curricular activities; clubs are run throughout the year in a wide variety of sports. Teams are run alongside the clubs to compete in both local and regional competitions against many other schools. The activities include:
- Rugby
- Football
- Netball
- Hockey
- Athletics
- Basketball
- Rounders
- Cricket
Pupils are also encouraged to participate in the school house system where the four houses, Harrison, Newton, Tennyson and Wesley, compete against each other in a range of activities. These activities include Football, Netball, Table Tennis, Scrabble, Reading and Photography. The points awarded for each activity are collected and an overall winner is declared after Sports Day in the summer. The inaugural house winner last year was Harrison.
As a department we run an annual ski trip to Italy for a week around Easter time, this is supplemented by regular trips to Sheffield Ski Village. This is to engage pupils in sports away from main stream activities and to give them a broader view of sport. We also run Sports Day which takes place in July each year at Quibell Park.
Key Stage 4 PE
At Key Stage 4, students take part in one hour of games per week as part of core PE. The activities offered reflect the National Curriculum and provide continuity from Key Stage 3. Lessons within Key Stage 4 are more games orientated, with the focus on offering participants the opportunity to become more skilful and intelligent performers. Through this, students acquire and develop skills and are encouraged to perform them with increased competency and confidence throughout a range of activities and contexts. Students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge of skills and techniques during more competitive game situations both in and out of the school environment, leading to a large number of our students being involved in sport and exercise throughout later life.
In addition to core PE we offer the opportunity for our students to study and achieve a BTEC qualification in Sport and Exercise Science. As part of the Year 9 option process, students are given the opportunity to tailor their timetables by choosing subjects that they have a particular interest in. At Frederick Gough, we offer both the BTEC First Certificate and BTEC First Diploma in Sport. Both of these courses are taken on a full time basis throughout Years 10 and 11. Both courses cover a variety of units, both practical and theoretical, and are designed to introduce learners to working in the sport sector or prepare them for further study at college level. The BTEC First Certificate is equivalent to 2 GCSEs A* - C and the Diploma 4 GCSEs A* - C.
At Frederick Gough we have a strong belief in the importance of extra-curricular activities. We believe that the extra curriculum program helps further enhance the PE curriculum and provides the opportunity for all pupils to compete as part of team and strive for both team and individual success. It also offers provision for gifted and talented pupils to represent teams at higher levels whether it is District, County or National squads.
