The SEN department at Frederick Gough School seeks to support and advance all children who need additional support. This falls into 3 main categories, learning, behavioural and physical.
The school supports students in a variety of different courses / teaching units and learning clubs.
- Children with learning needs are taught in groups of no more than 15 students. There will always be at least one teacher assistant working with these groups.
- The curriculum is differentiated to encourage students – for example there is a successful BTec workskills course in Year 10 and 11, specifically targeted for learners in their final years at school and planning for college courses or the world of work.
- All children with a reading age of below 10 years are given one-to-one booster sessions.
- Every Year 7 and new starters in other years takes an on-line screener test which will detect signs of Dyslexia.
- Children who might find transition from junior to secondary school could be admitted to our schools Nurture group for part or all of Year 7.
- The SEN team runs two clubs for those with communication or confidence difficulties which meet once a week.
- Students with behaviour difficulties are supported by the Inclusion team. This is a unit of 11 members of staff who work alongside students who might otherwise fail in the education system without the support and planning arrangements which this team put in place.
- The SEN team comprises of 20 members of staff who work with students who have learning or physical difficulties.
- In 2010, the SEN / Inclusion team worked successfully with 49 students who had a statement and another group of 50 students who were assessed as School Action Plus.
- In liaison with feeder schools extra transition days for SEN pupils in Year 6 can be arranged.
- The school has a fully equipped disabled toilet/shower room.
- TAs specialising in supporting Speech Therapy, Dyspraxia, EAL, Dyslexia programmes.
- The SEN department works closely with the Autism team with regular meetings throughout the year to fully support pupils on the spectrum.
