Policy Spotlight: Defining Bullying Behaviours

Bullying is defined by these three factors:

  • If the behaviours reported are REPEATED, NEGATIVE and INTENTIONAL, then they are bullying behaviours.
  • If the behaviours are NEGATIVE and INTENTIONAL but not repeated, they are not bullying behaviours. These actions will still be dealt with in line with the PB Policy.

Understanding the Roles Adopted in Bullying

We promote the role of the Upstander to help prevent bullying behavior.

  • Ringleader

The person who initiates the negative action (e.g., name-calling, pushing, stealing). Often reinforced by others.

  • Reinforcer

This person will justify the actions of the ringleader and keep egging the ringleader on.

  • Assistant

A student who contributes by laughing along, even nervously, often as a defense mechanism or to confirm allegiance.

  • Target

The person on the receiving end of verbal, indirect, or physical bullying behaviours from others.

  • Bystander

Recognizes bullying is happening but chooses to do nothing. Contributes by inaction.

  • Upstander

Stands up to bullying behaviours and offers emotional support. This is the positive role we promote.

Categories of Bullying Behaviours

Bullying takes several forms. Recognizing the type of behaviour is the first step toward reporting it.

  • Verbal Bullying

Repeated, negative use of speech, sign language, or gestures (e.g., swearing, discriminatory language, offensive comments).

  • Physical Bullying

Repeated, negative use of body contact to intentionally hurt others (e.g., punching, kicking, or pinching).

  • Indirect Bullying

Repeated, negative non-physical/non-verbal actions (e.g., cyberbullying, rumours, secret sharing, or isolating someone).

Cyberbullying: Online Safety and Reporting

Behaviour that is repeated, negative, and intentional to hurt others can also take the form of cyberbullying across social media platforms, messaging services, and emails.

  • All students can screenshot evidence of online bullying behaviour, and then report and block people on their social media using the reporting mechanisms one each platform.
  • If you or a young person are experiencing online sexual abuse, harassment or grooming, you must report this immediately to the police, Children's Services, and the school's safeguarding team. It can also be reported to CEOP following the link below.

Important: It is illegal to view any indecent images or nudes of young people.

⚖️ Consequences and Educational Development

At Frederick Gough School, we strive to deal with incidents of bullying behaviour in a swift and effective manner. Our support strategies are centered upon education and reflection, often examining the impact bullying has had on other people. While pupils displaying this behaviour will be sanctioned in line with the school's Behaviour Policy. Alongside this, we also ensure periods of reflection and education occur to modify behaviour and prevent reoccurrence.

Our Core Aims:

  • To eradicate any form of bullying when it occurs. We encourage all parties to be open and honest to resolve bullying issues.
  • To protect and support those who are bullied.
  • To change the behaviour of the bully.
  • To ensure bullying incidents are dealt with using restorative practice.

Our intervention strategies are part of a graduated response, fully outlined in the policy. Ultimately, all strategies are led by the needs and wishes of the child.
