Whole School Curriculum Intent
Curriculum intent at Frederick Gough School
At Frederick Gough we view the curriculum as the totality of our pupils’ experiences over their five years in school that enable them all to achieve our curricular aims. This document articulates how our whole school curriculum approach achieves this alongside our bespoke departmental intents and other contributory documents such as our SMSC map, Equality Policy, Behaviour Policy, SEND statement and Accessibility Plan.
The curriculum that we offer aspires to ensure that all students, including those with SEND and the most disadvantaged:
- Are able to achieve their full potential with the greatest access to a wide range of destinations by following a genuinely personalised curriculum facilitated by quality first teaching and learning.
- Have the knowledge, skills and qualities to play a full and active role in shaping and participating in future society, from a local to a global level.
- Use ICT to have flexible access to appropriate learning and teaching resources which facilitate their development.
- Are able to contribute to the development and direction of the school through pupil voice
- Are members of a fully inclusive and happy school community
- Attend a school that is the centre of the community for learning, development, support and recreation.
Within this, the curriculum that all pupils follow is designed to ensure:
- The maximum number of students succeed in English and Maths, which are the key factors that influence future education and work life chances.
- Pupils experience a broad and balanced curriculum offer throughout their five years. They are exposed to as many different subjects, cultures and experiences that will make them as well-rounded human beings as possible.
- We ensure that throughout their five years they have PSCHE delivered by discrete and qualified specialists where they are taught about healthy relationships, social cohesion and many other vital topics that take them out of their comfort zone.
- through Religious Education (and Studies in KS4) all students are equipped with a cultural and religious literacy & understanding, able to respect themselves and others and empowered to reflect and consider questions of deep meaning.
- Pupils develop a love of reading, understanding that a love of reading leads to a love of learning encapsulated in our reading programme.
