Transition Programme

Year 7 Transition Programme

Your Journey to Year 7

We know the move to secondary school is a big step! We're here to make the transition as smooth and positive as possible for everyone.

Hopefully the following information will support both you and your child, but please do contact Jo Rosie (Assistant Headteacher/SENDCo) at the school if you have any questions or would just like to talk something through.

What does transition into Year 7 look like?

1. Come and See Us

Our transition starts with our Open Evening in the autumn term, where everyone is welcome to visit us and see if Frederick Gough is for them. We also have an open day for pupils and parents who want to see the school during the working day.

2. We Visit Your School

During the first half of the summer term, we visit all children in their primary schools to say hello, provide initial information, and answer any questions. We also work with your teachers to learn about your academic progress, behaviour, interests, and any support you currently receive. This helps us identify anyone who might need a little extra help with the transition, such as those who are particularly anxious or have Special Educational Needs.

3. Getting to Know Us Better

Following our visit, we'll be in touch weekly during the second half of the summer term to build positive relationships and ease worries. Expect things like a postcard from a current Year 7 student, a video tour of the school you can watch as many times as you like, and a video message from your form tutor!

A Closer Look at Our Transition Events

Transition Days

Also during the second half of the summer term we run our transition days and our New Parents’ Evening.

This year the transition days are scheduled for 17-21 June 2024. Each school will be allocated a day and this will be communicated to you via your child’s primary school and via email. During this day the children come into school for the day to experience a range of lessons, break and dinner time and some extra-curricular clubs. We ask that children wear their primary school uniform. All arrangements for the day will be communicated to you nearer the time.

New Parents’ Evening

The New Parents’ Evening takes place on 27 June 2024. There are two time slots for this evening, purely because we cannot fit everyone into our Auditorium! The time slot will be communicated to you following the in school transition day. During this evening you will get to meet and ask questions of key staff, including your child’s form tutor, Learning Co-ordinator and the SEND Team. You will also be given information about the school day and will be asked to complete any necessary paperwork.

Pupil Information Booklet

During the transition period you will be given a Pupil Information Booklet. This contains useful information about uniform, equipment and the wider running of the school.

Hopefully this overview of the programme is useful to you. Please do contact us with any queries, questions or worries.
